The case of the missing Green Bin Riddle me this? What’s green and you can roll it out to the curb every week to help you reduce your garbage. If you said the Green Bin, you’re absolutely right. If you said a zucchini, clearly there is a problem because zucchini’s have no wheels! The Green bin is the greatest invention since sliced bread. Actually, it’s better than sliced bread because it’s making a big difference in our garbage creation. Did you know that according to the City of Toronto Website, 63% of waste was diverted from family homes in 2010. We think that’s in large part because of the green bin. Do you want proof, well consider this – Only 18% of waste was diverted from mulit residential units (apts, condominiums, etc) in 2010. And what’s the green bin connection you ask? Only 8% of the multi residential units have green bins. While we’re throwing stats around, one more for you to consider - about 30-50% (or almost HALF) of our garbage is organic material. So... why don’t multi residential units have green bins? Clearly this is a mystery to be solved. The Case of the Missing Green Bin! We understand that it will take some work to get green bins set up in apts but long term it would save money for property owners of multi residential buildings. Right now these property owners pay a fee based on how much garbage their building generates. By separating organics from garbage in the green bin program, multi residential units would have less waste and therefore save money and help the environment. The city of Toronto is slowly launching a roll-out program to begin including apartments and condos in this popular green bin program. And yes we know we’re impatient, but since close to half of Toronto’s population lives in multi-unit dwellings we need to move quicker. By Sheena and Julia
